Acadia National Park

Halfway through a week in Acadia National Park, Maine. It is absolutely breathtaking everywhere, I'm not sure I'll be leaving...ever.

It's raining now so I took the time to edit some of my favorites so far. There's many more to edit and more to shoot!

Ring flash love

I received my DIY Photography ring flash kit today! It took about 15 minutes to assemble (it would take any normal human 5 but I'm anal and meticulous, I even wore gloves so not to finger print the reflector). Compared to a $300 "true" ring flash this performs like a dream for $25 buckaroos!
I immediately took it for a test drive. Some quick portraits and then macro.

Lake Erie Fog

Saturday, I spontaneously decided to drive 45 minutes to find a large driftwood log that I wasn't willing to drag to my car a month ago but haven't stopped thinking about since. I drug my 8 yr old daughter along for some muscle. This said driftwood log can be seen in the first photos two blog posts down. Yeah, awesome bench material. I had already had it fitted with legs and lacquered...in my mind. But that was a month and a dozen storms ago.
We arrived at the game lands along the Lake Erie shore, parked in a pull off scattered with a wide assortment of refuse, panties and left flip flops included, strangely enough. Right in front of the classic bullet hole riddled NO OUTLET sign (as if the cliff and large expanse of water directly behind the sign wasn't enough info). We got our boots on and I grabbed my photo gear in case there was anything interesting. I was planning on just snatching up the driftwood and heading out to another photo location. We stepped out of the weeds and saw beautiful fog rolling in! Awesome!!
On the beach, as I had feared, all the driftwood in all the great lakes had coalesced in great heaps and had been plowed by the waves up against the bluffs. I searched in vain for my driftwood like a trying to find a specific stick in a giant pile of, well, sticks. No luck.
The fog was great so we stayed anyway for a few hours. The girl was whining 15 minutes in but then she found some cool driftwood of her own and then built a fort complete with a swing, really. Since my driftwood disappeared she was paranoid about hers being snatched away. So despite my constant reassuring and telling her to leave it by the car she carried her armload of wood up and down the beach wherever she went, whining about how heavy it was. It was a good afternoon. Enjoy the photos.

I got this star magnolia for father's day 4 years ago. It's a fantastic little thing, it's all bare sticks then suddenly one day in late April I'll look out and it's covered with brilliant white blooms. No leaves just flowers, and it smells wonderful. It's kind of a weird root beer scent but it's great. It's officially spring...finally!
So out come the flash and macro tubes!

...and I had to shoot our easter tulips before they became so depressed that their heads hit the table.

Beaver house and Heron rookery

I set out yesterday morning with the ultimate goal being to find some nesting Great Blue Herons. My father-in-law gave me the general location so I figured I could find it. I took the long way and stopped to hike around some gameland trails. I used only my new 50mm which my polarizer and all my neutral density filters fit happily upon, it was great to get back into some daytime long exposures. I let the wind ripple the waters around the beaver house while I stretched my exposures to 60+ sec. The whole time I was scolded loudly by a flock of Canada Geese, not a fan of the annoying honkers.

Spring is technically here but there was very little signs walking through the woods. I do love bright flowers and green leaves there's something so appealing about last years weeds and other annual growth after being ravaged by winter.

I did finally find the Heron rookery but only after driving past it at 70mph on the freeway. I doubled back and snapped approx 400 shots (gotta love digital). There has to be at least 25 nests in the tall sycamore trees above a waterway populated by, you guessed it, a flock of Canada Geese that also were very aware of my presence and not too comfortable with it. The nesting trees are situated perfectly in a ravine next to a bridge on the freeway. You can position yourself directly across from them and shoot on the same plane. It pushed my budget Sigma 300mm to it's limits but it performed satisfactorily. I'll go back in May to try to capture some little fuzzy heads popping out of those nests.

Early Spring Hike

I spent a couple hours hiking around the woods "near" the Trolley Line Trail (I never seem to stay on trails).
The skunk cabbage is blooming, one of the first definite signs of Spring. I'm fascinated by these little blossoms, they maintain a balmy 72 degrees inside and on chilly spring days if you peek in you'll find honeybees taking refuge.

I trudged happily through boggy marshes in my (formerly) shiny new hiking boots and tried to get lost, I found a tiny waterfall and giant tree fungi (whom pleasantly allowed my to pose with them).

Pining for spring

Despite what some large mystical rodent may have divined it's still very much wintertime in NW Pennsylvania. March is quite a schizophrenic month, it melts then freezes then rains then freezes and snows over the ice then rains over the snow. Everything is white then brown then brownish white then brown again then greenish brown then finally Spring truly arrives. I love spring.

Rock Creek Falls in winter

I drove through the blizzard today to revisit Rock Creek Falls. The steep snowy slippery climb down was well worth it. I bent the crap out of my cheapo tripod while falling off a log, almost dousing my gear and nearly getting hypothermia but I got a bunch of great shots and somehow managed to climb back up the ravine without injury or death. Check out day 269 for an autumn version.

2010 is over and while in no way do I regret this project I am still very glad it has come to a close. My technique has greatly improved although my creativity has suffered. Creativity will return quickly now that the pressure of a photo a day is done but the lessons I've learned will never leave me.
If I may impart any wisdom I have gleaned above all others the most important lesson would be this:

ALWAYS take the shot! (do it NOW)

NEVER count on "the shot' being there when you return from the grocery store or dropping the kids off or when you go get your gear (another good rule: always have a camera with you). Stopping and shooting may take a couple extra minutes and annoy whomever you are with at the time (i.e: wife and kids) but in the long run it takes much less time than going back and if you do go back for the shot 98% of the time "the moment" has passed. Whether it's a flock of birds in a tree or an amazing sky, if you feel the urge to stop and shoot it then stop and shoot it! I can think of many many times over the year that I missed a possibly fantastic shot because I'm a procrastinator.

Yes, I will be keeping the blog up and adding to it whenever I have something worthwhile to say and/or show you.

My tentative plans for this year are a more formal website and storefront (zenfolio) and possibly local galleries and shop consignments. I'll keep you updated.

Now to wrap this thing up, I thought I would repost my personal favorite shots of the year. Thank you all for the encouragement that motivated me all year.

Broke out the American Flyer train set. My dad got this for christmas when he was a boy and it's still chugging. It runs around the track with a loud electrical bzzzzzz, sparks a-flying. Fantastic fun! It's got a light up train station complete with little people, a bubbling oil well, a water tower with a electric activated spout that sounds like a snare drum, a bridge, and even a cattle car with cattle loading station that sounds like an old electric razor in a tin can when it's activated. Someday I'd like to have it professionally cleaned/refurbished and install it permanently in some sort of man-caveish location.

When I was a baby, my mother, who is an extreme arachnophobic, would play the "little spider, big spider" game with me. This game consisted of her, with a spider-shaped hand, lightly tickling my belly or back while saying softly, "little spider, little spider, little spider...". Then unexpectedly she would jump her hand up and down, saying gruffly and loudly, "BIG SPIDER, BIG SPIDER!" I would giggle every time.

I now love spiders...especially big ones.

This time of year the water is very low so there's less of a lake and more of a mud pit at the end. Nonetheless some interesting photo-ops and shoes that will likely end up in the garbage.

My sister-in-law's gorgeous wedding in St. Louis. The ceremony was at Bailey's Chocolate Bar and it couldn't have been more beautiful and perfect. I highly recommend the "Mexican" chocolate martini, hands down the best drink I've ever had.

The reception was at the Mariott at Union Station, another amazing place.

I started the day hitting Neshannock Falls, neslted outside Volant, PA.

Then on to Hell's Hollow trail which is the southern end of McConnell's Mill State Park following the smaller Hell's Run on it's way to meet Slippery Rock Creek. The weather wasn't as kind today with full sun creating harsh shadows but I did my best. The hike was quiet and beautiful. It was easy going until I continued past the "main attraction", Hell's Hollow Falls, off-trail where the rough terrain yielded much more appealing scenes further down Hell's Run.

Quite appropriate for a place called Hell's Hollow.

I love this house. I know I've shot it before but I was driving by this evening and it called to me.

If I had a large amount of disposable income I would buy this and all my other favorite abandoned properties so I could have total access to them without the hassle of sneaking or looking like a creep. I wouldn't think about restoring them but they would definitely become photography studios. I can only imagine what this place looks like inside.

Previously, I tried a "Jeff Brouws" style shot with this house and didn't really come close. He's amazing and I won't begin to compare my work to his but I think this first shot is closer. When looking at his images I'm inspired by the way he frames his scenes, the dual frames and where they're slightly incongruent,and the subjects he chooses.
I'm really struggling to create more compelling images and find my own style. I know a lot of my photographs don't really express that but, hey, you try to shoot a groundbreaking photo every single day. ;)

Whipped the car over and nabbed this on the way out to dinner. Lake LeBouf in Waterford, PA.
Still no power to my laptop (don't get me started), thus only minimal post processing. I used my trusty Cokin grad ND to cut down on the bright sky.

I ran so far awaaay

On the way home from work there as an enormous flock of seagulls covering nearly the entire eastern sky. It was awesome. After sifting through many blah shots, I found this frame. The birds were circling and drafting so fast that I was just snapping away. I love random accidental shots like this.
